I am one of those rare cases who did not grow up listening to Fred Penner. I was certainly aware of him and his music, but I more grew up with CKDA and my dad’s Rolling Stones cassettes. I didn’t truly learn of his greatness until my own itty-bitty came along. But I’m so glad I did.

Fred Penner‘s concert at Alix Goolden Hall on Sunday was just as much for the grownups in attendance as the kids. I’ll tell ya one thing I did grow up with: Monty Python. And Fred cracked two references before his third song. Rrright over the heads of all those littles.
Here he is listening to the sound of the ocean through a “seashell.”

While I didn’t bring a photo of me and Fred when I was nine (that was Tyson), I was just as tickled to be in the same room as a genuine, friendly, accessible, funny, talented legend as Fred.
And these kids? I think they just liked how he was singing about sandwiches.
